Hugh Bowman had a smile on his face as he walked out to the Rosehill mounting yard ahead of Saturday’s Group Two Tea Rose Stakes.
Bowman was about to ride gun filly Streama to a commanding win in the Tea Rose but his smile was for another reason.
He had just watched the Group One Underwood Stakes in Melbourne where Lion Tamer, the horse he rode to victory in last year’s Victoria Derby, announced himself as the new favourite for the Melbourne Cup with a stirring victory.
Bowman will get back aboard Lion Tamer in the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 2.
“I had a big smile on my face,” Bowman said.
“I’m rapt for the connections and it was great to see him run so well. I’m looking forward to the Turnbull now.”
It was a pleasing 20 minutes or so for Bowman as Streama staked her claim for a first Group One in the Flight Stakes on October 1 with her two length Tea Rose win to add to her Furious Stakes success.
“I didn’t expect him (Lion Tamer) to win today but it just shows how well he’s going,” Bowman said.
“I expected her (Streama) to win and it was nice to see her do it.”
